MacBook Pro or Windows Laptop? How I Compared

Updated September 2026: in 2018 I wrote about deciding between a Windows laptop and a new MacBook Pro after water damage, finding that well-specified Windows laptops cost as much as a Mac, and buying the MacBook Pro, which was still going strong about 972 days later. I have rewritten it into a guide to comparing a Mac with a Windows laptop.

After failing to get my water-damaged MacBook Pro repaired, I looked first at Windows laptops with a good configuration. I was surprised: the prices were close to Apple's, and none had the full set I wanted. One had a strong graphics card but little RAM, another had good graphics and RAM but a weaker processor, and the one that met all my needs cost as much as a MacBook Pro. After a lot of research and hesitation over the cost, I bought the MacBook Pro. When I wrote the original post, I had used it for about two and a half years.

How do you compare laptops fairly?

  • Start from your work: list the apps you use and what they need.
  • Compare total cost: price, expected years of use and resale value.
  • Check battery life and weight: from independent reviews, not only the specification sheet.
  • Look at software support: how long the manufacturer will provide updates.

Is a Mac still more expensive?

At the entry level, often not by much once specifications are matched, and Apple silicon MacBooks have strong battery life and long support. Upgrades to memory and storage at purchase are expensive, though, and cannot be added later. Windows laptops offer more choice and more upgradable models at every price.

What does a long-lasting laptop save you?

A laptop kept for five or six years costs far less per year than one replaced after three. Build quality, battery replaceability and software support decide how long it lasts.

Would I make the same choice now?

Probably, for my use. The right choice depends on your apps and budget. Compare real prices on the day you buy, as they change often.
